Science permeates the everyday life of all people in our society. Yet, most people's understanding of advances in biomedical and medical science is limited at best. Few make the connection that biomedical science is medicine and that biomedical scientists are working today toward the future of medicine.
Funding for biomedical science comes in large part from publicly funded sources like the National Institutes of Health. It is our goal to increase public appreciation of biomedical science through promoting a better understanding of biology and medicine. While most individuals can clearly see the value of the clinical studies to directly test new drugs or vaccines, the value of fundamental or basic research is often difficult for the non-scientist to grasp. This is because the direct application of a basic discovery to human health may take many years to be realized. However, without these basic discoveries, the pipe line for new drugs, vaccines and therapies would "dry up." This show is dedicated to explaining the exciting discoveries in biomedical research and their promise for the future of medicine.
